A cellist from the age of ten in his native Hull, Josh attended Sixth Form at Chethams’ School of Music where he won several bursaries and prizes. He studied at Royal Northern College of Music and was awarded prizes for cello and chamber music, followed by a Distinction in his postgraduate MA at the Royal Academy of Music. His principal teachers have been Nicholas Jones, Nick Trygstad and Felix Schmidt; and Susan Sheppard and Jonathan Manson for Baroque ‘cello.

Concerto performances include Saint-Saens, Strauss, Elgar, Stamitz and most recently Dvorak with the Lincoln Symphony Orchestra – with whom he will perform Tchaikovsky’s Rococo Variations in 2017. Chamber music performances include live broadcasts on BBC Radio 3, recitals at St-Martin-in-the-Fields, Wigmore Hall and other major venues. Festivals include Aberystwyth Musicfest, Lake District Summer Music, Suffolk Villages Festival and Mendelssohn on Mull.

Already enjoying an expanding range of freelance work with orchestras including the Halle, BBC Philharmonic, Royal Liverpool Philharmonic, City of London Sinfonia, Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment, Yorkshire Baroque Soloists and Hanover Band, Josh regularly appears as principal cellist of the Essex Baroque Orchestra.

He performs 20thC music on a copy of an 1801 William Forster cello, generously loaned by the Royal Academy of Music, with a modern bow by Paul Sadka. For period work he plays on the unique 1824 Corsby classical cello, loaned by Cherubim Music Trust.
